Er gibt an, wie viel Wärme das Kühlsystem des Computers vom Prozessor ableiten muss, damit er von zu hohen Temperaturen schützt, die er nicht ertragen kann. Der Wert der vorgeschlagenen Wärmeleistung wird vom Hersteller für jeden Bestandteil (Prozessoren, aber auch Grafikkarten, etc.) spezifiziert. Einen höheren TDP haben in der Regel leistungsstärkere Prozessoren. Mit dem wachsenden Wert erhöht sich auch der Anspruch auf die Kühlung. Die Einheit des TDP ist ein Watt.
