Narrow directional (supercardioid) microphones

Narrow directional microphones, referred to as supercardioid microphones, are designed to capture sound primarily from one particular direction. Their sensing field can be imagined as a narrow cone pointing forward from the microphone. This orientation makes them very effective at suppressing unwanted sounds coming from the sides. Compared to the more common cardioid characteristic, the supercardioid is even narrower and more sensitive to sound directly from the front. However, the price for this narrow directivity is a small sensitivity area directly behind the microphone. While sound from the sides is almost completely ignored, the microphone picks up a small portion of the sound coming from behind. This must be taken into account when positioning it, for example on stage in relation to the listening speakers. This type of microphone is used in situations where it is crucial to isolate one sound source from the surrounding environment, such as capturing vocals on a noisy stage or recording dialogue during filming.
