In earlier reviews I have registered the occasional complaint about burning and smell. Fortunately, the fears were not realized. My pregnant partner, who now has the sense of smell of a basset hound and will chase away any smell, stayed calmly in the kitchen the first time she used the machine and even survived the accidental baking of the last piece of toast. It was roasted for half an hour and there was no smell. Of course some burning is going on, but perfectly acceptable.
