As a semi-finished product, which I will harden at home with water glass, quite good, at a price that can still be accepted. As a finished product that is supposed to last, it's not so good anymore. The red layer with a grain size of 200 is broken down very quickly. The 600 grit white layer is slightly slower to break down. It is a stone with a relatively soft and inconsistent binder. These types of stones are more suitable for Asian knives made from AUS8 or VG10 hard steels, where the hard steel does not force the stone to expose the abrasive as much. These stones are not very suitable for common European knives made of steels with hardness from 50 to 56 HRC, because softer steel forces the stone to expose the abrasive very quickly and thus the stone fades more than it sharpens. Most of these Asian stones from China have this softer binder that wears off quickly. After various trials on how to additionally harden the binder for European steels, a chemical cure using a solution of water-glass and water proved successful. Some stones with a lower grain size up to JIS 1000 need more passes through the water glass. One pass through the water glass is: 1. Soak the dry stone for 8 to 48 hours in a solution of 1 part water glass and 12 to 15 parts water . 2. Then rinse well under running water and dry well with a cloth. 3. Then leave to dry and ripen for about 3 weeks. A white residue is formed on the surface from the chemical reaction. 4. Then soak in clean water for at least 2 hours and then test with an old knife or steel plate on a flat surface to see how the stone grinds and to remove any glass crust from the stone. 5. Allow the stone to dry and mature for 1 to 2 weeks. 6. Soak the stone again for approx. 2 hours and then try with an old knife or steel plate on the flat as the stone grinds and sand off any glass crust. 7. Allow the stone to dry and mature for 1 to 2 weeks. If the stone is still breaking away quite quickly, then more passes through the water glass are needed. After the second or third pass through the water glass, the stone begins to approach the properties of Japanese stones, Matsunaga, Naniwa, etc. I.e. grinds well and fades little.
The indication of the grain size on the stone in JIS units also corresponds to the actual design of the stone.
The stone can be additionally hardened with a solution of water glass and water
The red layer exposes the abrasive very quickly and therefore it wears off more than it grinds.
