When you connect the speakers to the computer with the jack, I guess they determine if they should wake up based on the "amount of sound" (volume and time) at the input. So if one doesn't have the volume set high on the PC, it can wake up after a few seconds. When connected via USB, the wake-up is noticeable, but takes a fraction of a second.
