It's rare for me to get so excited about something that I actually get round to writing a review, but with this product I simply have to. I've had, or still have, several monitor lights and have been using them for quite a long time. I've tried at least the models from Xiaomi, BenQ and Yeelight. Xiaomi was a bit of a pioneer, Yeelight could already be controlled via an assistant and had a backlight, and BenQ, well, that one is really well-built, full of features, and its controller is in another league compared to Xiaomi and Yeelight. As monitors changed and curved ones started appearing, issues began to crop up with mounting the lights on the monitor, and also because their edges touched the top edge of the screen, which is definitely not ideal for lighting. On the Odyssey Ark, none of the lights could even be mounted because it has a 1000R curvature and is quite thick, causing the clamp to slip off the back of the monitor, tilting the light forward and risking a fall. I solved this by modifying the mount and placing the light underneath a shelf, but it wasn't a completely ideal solution, if only because when you move the monitor a bit, the light is no longer centred and it requires a rather complicated adjustment. With my next 1000R monitor, the Samsung ViewFinity S85, the situation repeated itself, but this time I decided to solve it systematically and bought this "banana" from Alza. And you know what? It was a truly great choice! Granted, it doesn't look as good over the monitor as the BenQ, let's be honest, it looks quite cheap (it is plastic, after all, while the others are made of metal), but the functionality and ergonomic controls more than make up for it. The light intensity is controlled by turning the top part of the controller, while the light colour is adjusted by turning its body. A brilliant solution – no need to hold the controller down and twist, or select a function icon like on the BenQ. The button press has a fantastic tactile response, so you know exactly that the button has actually been pressed. Changing the batteries in the controller – also brilliant, you just press on the marked spot and the cover, which is held in place by magnets, lifts up. No more complicated gripping of the controller and the far-from-ideal twisting of its bottom part like with the aforementioned lights. Though, how often are you actually going to do that? I've changed the batteries maybe only once in my first Xiaomi. But I wanted to mention it because it really impressed me. In the box, there is also a nice braided cable with a right-angled USB-C connector. Controls are also located directly on the body of the light, but I find them redundant as the controller is much more close to hand. At least the function icons are backlit, so you have a clear overview and can easily find them even in the dark. For a price of just over £27 in a sale, you can't really fault this light for anything, not even its cheap plastic look, and definitely not the lack of a backlit controller like on the BenQ (which costs about 5x as much), so the only downside is that I had to order another one. If you use a curved monitor and don't feel the need to look at premium materials, you can't go wrong with this light! The rating is clear – * * * * *
