I bought a GE550 gaming router to go with my new 2Gb/s fibre connection from O2, so that I wouldn’t have to buy an overpriced O2 modem. For some reason, however, when connected via LAN to a PC with a 2.5 Gb/s network card, it only achieved speeds of 600–1000 Mb/s instead of the expected approximately 2000 Mb/s. Paradoxically, I recorded speeds of up to 1400 Mb/s via Wi-Fi on my iPhone. To rule out a fault with the PC’s network card, I also connected the router to an external 2.5 Gb/s USB-C network card via a 20 Gb/s USB-C port. The result was exactly the same. I used both Cat 7 and Cat 8 cables for the connection, tried various ports, QoS was disabled, and I went through all the possible settings. When I, the O2 technician and ChatGPT had all run out of ideas, I bought the BE550 – a non-gaming model – from Alza instead of the GE550. Within five minutes of plugging it in and setting it up, everything was working like clockwork, and I was getting the full connection speed over the LAN. I don’t know what the problem is with the GE550 router, but with a 2Gb/s fibre connection using VDSL Bonding and Fibre technology from O2, I’d steer well clear of it.

I've now taken all this, thrown it away and bought two of these GE550s, which work absolutely awesome. Fast response of any device on the network, stability and no outages. Plus it looks good and one will quietly cover a 200m2 house with no speed limit ( I have a brick, for example itong is a much bigger problem to cover)
