The precursor to the sweet sixties is here. Nikita Khrushchev is burying Stalinism, but Soviet tanks are crushing Budapest. In Dejvice, the Hotel Internacional stands tall, while in the Reduta Jazz Club, the first Czech rock music is played by Jiří Suchý and Viktor Sodoma. Television launches the sports news programme “Goals, Points, Seconds”, the Eurovision Song Contest starts in Switzerland, and in America, Elvis Presley is driving the crowds wild. Ericsson produces the first mobile phone, the first gorilla is born in captivity, and people in Czechoslovakia can legally place bets again after years of prohibition. Welcome to the year when history and culture were set in motion.
