A novel about the loyal friendship of Amis and Amil

Julius Zeyer’s novel “The Faithful Friendship of Amis and Amil” tells the story of two knights who meet at the court of Charlemagne and become deeply bound by friendship. They are so alike that people often mistake them for one another. When Amis is falsely accused of seducing his master’s daughter, he must clear his name in a fight to the death. Amil disguises himself as Amis and fights in his place. He saves Amis, but is punished by God with leprosy for his false oath. Amis does not abandon his friend and lovingly cares for him. Eventually, Amil learns that he can only be healed by bathing in the blood of Amis's children. Amis sacrifices his children, Amil is cured – and God miraculously brings the children back to life. The story ends with their reconciliation and spiritual union after death. Zeyer conceived the work as a symbol of loyalty, sacrifice, and a pure, almost sacred friendship.
