Apple Tree Love
1895: Tereza, a poor Jewish woman, loses her only daughter, Klara, the fruit of a forbidden relationship with a wealthy man. The newborn baby is torn from her arms and taken from a remote village somewhere on the Hungarian-Slovak border to the distant city of Pressburg. The only anchor in her life is a house in the middle of an apple orchard – the best thing she has left from her marriage to a violent village schoolmaster. But one question continues to torment her: will she ever see her little girl again?
2014: Simona is the youngest member of a family of women who have inhabited the old country house, surrounded by an apple orchard, for five generations, resisting wars, poverty, and human malice. Now, Simona is returning to its walls after quitting her job, leaving Bratislava, and burning all her bridges. She plans to think and sort out her life in her family home. And although she still doesn't know what she's looking for… a whole new world is about to open up to her.
Six historical periods and six old apple varieties frame a rich novelistic mosaic in which a charming and moving story is combined with an authentic depiction of life in the Slovak countryside. And there's even a recipe for a sweet finishing touch to the novel: Angelica's magical apple pie.
