Beasts
A shocking historical thriller from the author of the Inspector Elena Blanco detective series. Winner of the 2021 Premio Planeta prize.
It is the summer of 1834, and a deadly cholera epidemic is ravaging Madrid. The people live in fear of the disease, but in the poor neighbourhoods beyond the city walls, something even more terrifying is happening: the mutilated and dismembered bodies of young girls are turning up. Rumours are spreading that the culprit is a bloodthirsty Beast, whom no one has ever seen with their own eyes. When little Clara disappears, her sister Lucía, along with the one-eyed policeman Donoso and the journalist Diego, launches an investigation. This will lead them into a darkness that has hitherto been hidden from the human mind.
Carmen Mola
Carmen Mola is a Spanish author of detective novels. She sparked huge interest in 2018 with her debut, The Gypsy Bride (La novia gitana), starring police inspector Elena Blanco, which was followed by the equally successful sequel, The Purple Network (La red púrpura). After the third instalment in the series, The Nena (La Nena), a standalone thriller entitled La Bestia (The Beast) was released, which immediately topped the bestseller charts. When it won the lucrative Premio Planeta literary prize in 2021, the real authors decided to reveal their identities: the pseudonym Carmen Mola is a front for the trio of writers and screenwriters Jorge Díaz, Agustín Martínez and Antonio Mercero.
