Complications of diabetes and modern trends in diabetology
Diabetology is a rapidly developing field dedicated to both the care of type 1 diabetics, using the latest technologies for glucose monitoring and insulin delivery, and the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes, for whom several new drug classes have become available in the last 10 years.
The book comprehensively and critically describes and evaluates the latest diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for individual complications of diabetes. For diabetic retinopathy, it covers the use of artificial intelligence in screening and the most modern treatment strategies, including anti-VEGF therapy. Regarding diabetic kidney disease, it discusses in detail the benefits of recent drugs such as SGLT-2 inhibitors and finerenone. Diabetic foot syndrome and diabetic neuropathy are clearly described using new findings from the international consensus on the diabetic foot. An important part of the publication is also dedicated to obesity, the treatment of which has seen incredible progress in the last five years, and to heart failure in patients with diabetes. Lastly, it discusses the prevention of chronic complications of diabetes using modern technologies, telemedicine, or improved sleep hygiene. The importance of physical activity is also mentioned, which, although often neglected by both doctors and patients, is key in preventing these conditions.
This modern monograph uses numerous clear diagrams and images in addition to the text to aid understanding of the subject matter. The authors' aim is to convey the latest scientific knowledge in an accessible format and to explain its application in routine clinical practice. The book is intended primarily for doctors in internal medicine specialities such as diabetology, nephrology, or cardiology. However, it can also serve as a comprehensive overview for general practitioners, as well as for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.
