EM 488.0/460 series electrical units

In the summer of 2024, the final chapter was closed on the operation of the EM 488.0/460 series electric multiple units, known among railway enthusiasts and the public by the nickname “panťák”. The book “Electric Multiple Units of the EM 488.0/460 Series” offers a comprehensive look at the history, technology, and operational life of these iconic trains, which for decades were an integral part of suburban and intercity transport in Czechoslovakia and later in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The publication covers not only the technical description of the electric and trailer (non-motorised) carriages but also the general historical development of electric multiple units – from the first experiments in the 1920s to their massive deployment in the post-war period. Emphasis is placed on the development, series production, and the specifics of individual production series.
Inside the book, the reader will find an overview of their operational deployment in various regions, a chapter dedicated to accidents and the decommissioning of the units, and of course, a description of their gradual decline and replacement by modern vehicles. The book includes a detailed table of all units produced, including their depots, dates of withdrawal, and eventual physical scrapping. The publication is richly illustrated – containing a multitude of previously unpublished colour photographs from their service and decommissioning, as well as standard drawings of the electric and trailer carriages.
This book is not only a tribute to the “panťáks” but also a valuable document for all those interested in railway history and technology.
