Shinra Electric Power Company uses mako, the planet's life energy, as a source of power and wealth. The corporation is opposed by a determined group of idealists known as Avalanche, who are trying to stop the destruction of nature and the abuse of energy for their own profit.

Joining their ranks is Cloud Strife, a former elite SOLDIER who now works as a mercenary. Together with Avalanche, he embarks on a dangerous mission to destroy the Mako 1 reactor in the heart of Midgar.
