Not every back is bent from pain. Some are contorted by the weight of guilt. Bochoř, near Přerov, 1941 and 1942. In a spa village where the smell of sulphurous iron water mingles with the weight of wartime, the fates of two men intertwine. Ambrož Ptáček, a foreman at a suitcase factory in Přerov, abandons his family for a fickle love. Dezider Horvát, the patriarch of a Romani family, seeks safety for his loved ones during the Nazi occupation. With the arrival of Heydrich, informers appear in the protectorate, whose envy and vindictiveness plunge entire families into misery. While Mayor Lanč tries to protect the village from Nazi decrees, someone takes pleasure in writing denunciations to the Gestapo, adding fuel to the fire of mistrust. In these difficult times, Ambrož's wife Máří also fights for her family, seeking the strength to preserve a home for her children despite her crumbling marriage and the uncertainty of the era.
Lenka Chalupová is a journalist and writer, a graduate of journalism at Palacký University in Olomouc. She is a recipient of the Olomouc Region Award for Literature. Born in Přerov, where she still lives with her family, she works as the town's press officer. She has written a number of successful novels. Her trilogy set in the Přerov region during and after the war – Kyselé třešně (Sour Cherries), Páté jablko (The Fifth Apple), and Svatojánské ořechy (St. John's Nuts) – was particularly well-received by readers. Motto has published her novels Když se trhá nebe (When the Sky Tears) and Hrbaté duše (Hunched Souls), which are also set in the area around Přerov. Her interests include literature, theatre, film, fine art, and culture in its entirety.
