Intestinal Rehabilitation, Transplantation and Related Procedures
This book focuses on the clinical practice of doctors involved in the perioperative and postoperative care of patients undergoing major gastrointestinal tract surgery and reconstructions after abdominal catastrophes. It also deals with the long-term care of patients with intestinal failure. The goal of the comprehensive prehabilitation concept is to prepare patients for major surgical procedures in the fields of cardiac surgery, pulmonary surgery, transplant medicine, etc. Metabolic intensive care and the algorithm of intestinal rehabilitation and prehabilitation are very complex processes. Their implementation and coordination is an innovation that does not yet have a defined place in the Czech Republic and represents a new concept aimed at improving patient prognosis.
The book is based on the already functional system at IKEM, in which the individual components of the intestinal rehabilitation and prehabilitation algorithm are already established (anaesthesiology, surgery, nutrition centre, home parenteral nutrition centre, pharmacology, microbiology, gastroenterology). The clinical coordinator is a crucial and irreplaceable factor in management. The book is innovatively focused on the area of management, which has its own timeline and where each step requires a precise procedure to maintain continuity of care. Some selected aspects have not yet been published in this context.
The publication also covers the current management of the home parenteral nutrition programme, with a detailed discussion of the role of home parenteral nutrition nurses as an integral aspect of care and coordination (from indication, education, hospital care, and outpatient care to programme logistics, etc.).
The contribution of this book is that it is a real guide for clinical practice, which can be helpful to many clinical disciplines in the care of the most complex patients, and at the same time, it complements already published books on the topic of intestinal failure.
The target group includes gastroenterologists, anaesthesiologists, intensivists, surgeons and nurses, including those in home healthcare.
