Labyrinth of pain
The multifaceted phenomenon of pain through the eyes of Professor Pavel Kolář
Although few people die from pain, many die in pain, and even more live with it. Pain pervades our daily lives, and we must learn how to manage it so that it doesn't become a disease and, in its consequences, harm us. Some can endure the same pain without noticing, while for others it can be burdensome or even devastating...
Nevertheless, pain has a useful and meaningful role in our lives. It alerts us to the fact that something is happening in our bodies. The book Labyrinth of Pain aims to show that pain is not merely an unpleasant sensation, but an experience that involves the entire human being. It represents the point where the body and mind meet. The moment the mind becomes the regulator of this meeting, a person is no longer just a passive recipient of pain but also a kind of alchemist, capable of mitigating or intensifying its intensity based on mental and emotional states and the associated chemical processes in the brain and the entire organism. The ancient Stoics claimed that the mind can control our reactions to suffering, and modern neuroscience shows that there is a biological basis for this old truth – how we think, how we observe ourselves, how we approach our feelings and expectations can genuinely influence how we perceive pain. By penetrating our consciousness, pain significantly affects the way we experience the world. It speaks to the very essence of existence, as in pain, a person experiences their finiteness and their vulnerability.
In the book Labyrinth of Pain, we will not only travel the path of the sensation of pain at its point of origin but also through the depths of the subconscious, consciousness, and experience, and we will learn how to approach pain so that it does not become damaging but shows us the way to self-discovery. When we experience pain, we often learn something about ourselves. It can show us our limits, but it also helps us grow and strengthen our resilience.
