Lying girls

At the beginning of May, single mother Maríanna leaves her house and never returns. She leaves an ambiguous note on the kitchen table for her neglected teenage daughter, Hekla, which leads everyone, including the police, to conclude that she disappeared voluntarily and committed suicide. However, when her dead, mutilated body is found seven months later in a lava field near the Grábrók crater, police officer Elma Jónsdóttir and her Akranes colleagues must reopen the case and begin a new investigation – this time for murder.

Fifteen years earlier, a new mother lies in a maternity ward, struggling to accept her own child. Over the years, she gradually finds her way to the child, but their relationship is so strange and twisted that it results in more than one shocking tragedy.

After the highly successful first book featuring investigator Elma Jónsdóttir, The Creak on the Stairs, which won the Svartfuglinn award for best crime manuscript and has been translated into numerous languages, Icelandic author Eva Björg Ægisdóttir returns with an equally suspenseful sequel. Girls Who Lie is a chilling psychological thriller about how a troubled childhood and trauma can lead to horrific events later in life.
