Miloslav (Miles) J. Breuer
When the American editor Hugo Gernsback started publishing the monthly magazine Amazing Stories in New York in April 1926, the very first magazine dedicated to the newly emerging genre of science fiction, he had no choice but to reprint previously published works by the classics Jules Verne, H. G. Wells and Edgar Allan Poe for the first nine issues. It was only in the following years that new names appeared for readers on the magazine's pages. The very first new author in Amazing Stories was Miles J. Breuer, whose short story “The Man with the Strange Head” Gernsback included right after the conclusion of Wells' novel The First Men in the Moon in the January 1927 issue.
But the life story and literary work of the now-forgotten doctor from Nebraska, whom American science fiction readers at the turn of the 1920s and 30s considered a true star of the genre, is much more colourful and interesting. He didn't start writing for Amazing Stories; he published his first short story that could be classified as science fiction almost two decades earlier, though it went unnoticed by readers. Not only that, he originally wrote and published a number of his literary works, including early short stories (only later published in science fiction magazines), in Czech under the name Miloslav J. Breuer.
