Mona's Eyes: A Year of Art Before Losing Her Sight
Fifty-two weeks. That’s how much time ten-year-old Mona has to discover all the beauty in the world. Every Wednesday after school, her grandfather Henry takes her to a gallery, where they immerse themselves in a work of art. For almost a year, Mona and Henry visit the Musée d'Orsay, the Louvre, and the Centre Pompidou, dedicating one day a week to one of fifty-two selected masterpieces. Each time, they examine it closely, discuss it, and let it surprise, move, challenge, and inspire them. All this with the knowledge that Mona faces the risk of losing her sight completely within a year.
While exploring the works and ideas of Botticelli, Vermeer, Goya, Courbet, Kahlo, Basquiat, and many others, Mona discovers not only the power hidden in art but also the importance of generosity, doubt, melancholy, loss, and rebellion.
Mona's Eyes is a novel about the depth of human life, a fascinating guide to significant works of world art, and a moving story about the relationship between a little girl and her grandfather. The book by French art historian Thomas Schlesser has become an international phenomenon, published in 37 countries.
The Czech edition includes a fold-out poster-sized dust jacket with colour reproductions of all the artworks Mona and Henry discuss on their outings.
Translated by Šárka Belisová.
