A body hangs from the water wheel. The truth waits beneath the surface.
The naked body of a man hangs from the water wheel of an abandoned mill. Newly appointed Inspector Haze must leave the Christmas ball and plunge into the investigation of the brutal murder of Frank Darrow, a man who left more scars on those around him than is at first apparent.
His death leaves not just a void, but a host of questions. Who hated him so much that simply killing him wasn't enough? What secrets did the life of a notorious drunkard and womaniser hold? With the help of American nobleman and surgeon Jason Redmond, Inspector Haze must unravel a complex web of relationships, secrets, and old grudges. But the crime is not the only shadow falling over Birch Hill. The case will reveal the true face of the local community and change the lives of both investigators forever.
