Sixty years at the pinnacle of surgery and life, with humility and respect for every moment
This year, Professor Pavel Pafko celebrated his eighty-fifth birthday and, in a few months, sixty years in the same profession—namely, as an abdominal and thoracic surgeon at the 3rd Surgical Clinic of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague. Born in Bratislava, a father of three daughters, a teacher to thousands of medical students, and a mentor to hundreds of young doctors, he is the recipient of many awards, but he certainly does not reminisce about them in this book—neither the honours nor the merits. “I always saw it as things just flowed, and I was just floating along. I never thought about whether I was at the top or how to climb it,” says Pavel Pafko, who, in this publication, looks back on his life with humility and respect, sharing anecdotes from his practice, remembering his patients, students, friends, and companions, and reflecting on contemporary society, the public sphere, culture, health, life, and death.

A native of Bratislava, father of three daughters, teacher to thousands of medical students, and mentor to hundreds of young doctors, he is the recipient of many awards, from the Medal of Merit (2013) to the Arnošt Lustig Award (2020).
