Reading club behind bars
Twenty-two-year-old Violet Powell is released from prison after serving twenty-two months for a drunk driving accident that killed a kindergarten teacher.
Retired English teacher Harriet Larson, who runs a prison reading club, has to deal with empty nest syndrome.
Retired toolmaker Frank Daigle still hasn't gotten over the loss of his wife, whom Violet killed.
One day the three meet in a Portland bookstore, where Violet has come to buy a book they were discussing at a prison reading club just before her release. Harriet picks out new reading material for the inmates and Frank works as a janitor. Their life paths begin to interconnect in a way that will deeply mark them all.
Behind Bars Reading Club is an honest, uplifting story about the ability to deal with guilt, second chances, and the power of books to change our lives. Sincerely, with a joke, with elegance and deep understanding, Monica Wood presents the decision, that shape human destiny, and kindness, worth living for.
