Reason and feeling
Sense and Sensibility is one of the most famous novels in English literature and the first book Jane Austen published. The story of sisters Marianne and Elinor Dashwood takes place in the setting and atmosphere of the old English countryside and has been enchanting readers with its wit and charm for over two centuries.
After the death of their father, the two main heroines must also cope with the loss of their social standing. Like all propertyless girls of that era, their best chance of escaping their difficult situation is a favourable marriage. Marianne is charmed by a young man named Willoughby, and their affection seems to be mutual. This is watched with concern by Colonel Brandon, a family friend, who himself is tormented by his love for Marianne. What’s more, he does not trust Willoughby at all and seems to know something bad about his past. The older sister, Elinor, forms a relationship with Edward Ferrars, but his family desires a wealthier match for him and tries to thwart the relationship with Elinor. Edward seems to be a man of character and integrity, yet from a certain moment, he begins to act distant towards Elinor.
Besides clashing with the rigid conventions of their surroundings, the girls also struggle with their vastly different natures. The emotionally-driven Marianne can spontaneously and passionately give in to her emotions and expects the same from others, while the more reserved Elinor tries to hide her feelings in an effort not to burden those around her. However, both must eventually change their stances under the influence of events…
