Restless Grave

Who says death cannot be cured?

The year is 1887, and Anselm Godwin is studying medicine at the University of Glasgow. When he and his classmates are not observing drastic operations or autopsies, he spends all his time immersed in books. His older brother, Ezra, was originally supposed to become a doctor, but he died tragically a year ago. Anselm fled from his grief as far as he could and took his brother's place. But now he must return home to the north, to the Scottish Highlands, and face his demons. Ada Selwyn works as a gravedigger. By day, she runs a funeral service with her father; by night, she earns extra money by robbing graves and selling the bodies. However, her illegal activities backfire cruelly, and Ada is in danger of losing everything. When Anselm and Ada's paths cross, they become unlikely allies. Anselm is convinced he can outwit death itself and bring the deceased Ezra back to life. And Ada is the only one who can help him. Together, they venture into forgotten places in a mysterious valley, where neither a medical education nor faith can protect them from what should have remained buried very deep indeed.

Quotation mark 1

About the book:

A Restless Grave is a novel about pernicious desire, sibling rivalry, and a morbid fear of mortality and, above all, death itself. It is heavily influenced by my love for the Scottish landscape, Victorian England, and tragic characters. I hope that amidst the melancholy and gloomy events, readers will also find a glimmer of hope and goodness. It lies somewhere under the layer of cemetery soil.
