Secrets

A deadly secret from the past comes back to life

The year is 1992. Captain Jack Reacher, a military investigator, uses unorthodox but highly effective methods in his work. This is why the Secretary of Defence selects him to join a special task force investigating a series of strange, seemingly unrelated deaths of elderly men. One mysteriously fell from a hospital window. Another ingested an unusual poison. A third died while fishing on a lake. And the list goes on… Reacher represents the US Army in the group, working alongside agents from the FBI, CIA, and the Department of the Treasury. It turns out that all the dead men are connected to a tragic event that occurred in India twenty-three years ago—and which indirectly involves the Secretary of Defence and his wife. The task force must deliver results. And soon. Otherwise, its members will become the scapegoats in this high-stakes game they are involuntarily playing. Reacher knows this well, but he doesn't care about politicians or the corridors of power. He just wants to find the killer quickly and uncover the secret that has cost so many lives. And so, in the end—as always—he handles it his own way. Unconventionally and effectively.

The Secret is the twenty-eighth volume in the Reacher series. Starting with the thriller The Sentinel, Child has been writing it with his brother, Andrew.

Child's hero, former military policeman Jack Reacher, first appeared in the novel Killing Floor (1999), which was an immediate success, earning the author numerous awards and launching a series that now has thirty instalments. In 2022, the streaming platform Amazon Prime Video began airing a TV series titled Reacher, based on this book series.
