The picturesque town of Markham, steeped in the history of producing award-winning Yorkshire beer, boasts two breweries: Yoredale Ram and Ewe. Yoredale Ram is run by Richard Foster, and at the head of Ewe is his sister, Emily, with her partner, Janice. Family relations are strained. And the return of local rebel Brendan Scholes only deepens the animosity.

Scholes boasts that he has found the long-lost secret recipe for the beer that once made David Foster, Richard and Emily’s father, famous. What's more – he wants to be paid handsomely for his find. Shortly after, his dead body is found in the fermentation tank of one of the breweries.

Rumours of the secret recipe for the famous beer, a murderer on the loose, and the nervous residents of Markham. All of this is increasingly stirring up tension in the town. Will Inspector Jim Oldroyd manage to solve the case before someone else dies?
