Synology BST170-8T
Synology BST170-8T
The Synology BST170-8T NAS, in its Tower design, serves as a family cloud storage solution for saving, sharing and backing up digital files. The device integrates a hard drive with a total capacity of 8TB and the DiskStation Manager operating system for data management. Its hardware includes an Intel Celeron J4125 processor and 4GB of DDR4 system RAM. Users access their photos and documents from various devices on their home network and over the internet. A single LAN port provides the network connection, while two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports are available for connecting external drives.
Key features of the Synology BST170-8T NAS
- The device includes a built-in drive with a total capacity of 8000000MB
- 4GB of DDR4 system RAM
- Intel Celeron J4125 processor
- Integrated artificial intelligence sorts photos locally, right on the device
- Storage space for up to 8 separate users
- Plex Media Server for streaming multimedia to various screens
- Three-year Acronis True Image Essentials licence for backing up one computer
Central storage
The device provides storage space for up to eight separate users. Each member of the household gets their own separate space, creating a private environment for files stored on the built-in 3.5" SATA HDD. The system defines access rights for sharing selected folders and documents without complex configuration. File sharing is handled via the supported SAMBA, HFS and CIFS network protocols, which are compatible with common computer operating systems.
Local artificial intelligence
The integrated Intel Celeron J4125 processor powers algorithms for face and object recognition in photos. The built-in technology works locally, right on the device, and does not send sensitive personal data to external cloud services. Users can search for specific images by person or location, making it easier to organise the family archive. The local AI photo library automatically sorts uploaded images into albums without the need for manual tagging.
Multimedia server
The storage supports the installation of the Plex Media Server app for organising your films, videos, and music collection. Users can stream multimedia content to TVs, tablets, or mobile phones on their home network and while on the go. The system manages the media library in one place and maintains a clear structure for all files. During streaming and normal operation, the device has a typical power consumption of 14.75W. In stand-by mode, consumption drops to 2.83W.
Simple setup
Setting up the entire system takes just a few minutes and only requires connecting it to a power source and your home router. The included 36W power adapter and RJ-45 network cable are provided for this purpose. The setup wizard on your mobile phone guides you through the entire process step by step. Users don't need to configure complex network settings and can immediately start uploading their first files to this compact, 1.3kg storage device.
Security, backup and home monitoring
The device protects your data using built-in snapshot technology, which serves as local recovery points. These points help restore files in the event of a ransomware attack or accidental deletion. Users can back up macOS computers via Time Machine or Windows computers using Acronis True Image Essentials software, which includes a three-year licence for one computer. The storage works with Synology cameras to create a local home surveillance system. Recordings remain securely stored on the hard drive without the need to pay monthly fees for remote cloud storage. Users receive notifications about detected events directly on their mobile phones. The device operates reliably indoors at an operating temperature from 0°C to a maximum of 35°C.
