The Synology RS1221 is a 2U rackmount network-attached storage solution for securely storing and backing up company data. This device is powered by a quad-core AMD Ryzen V1500B processor running at 2.2GHz. The basic 4GB of DDR4 ECC system memory effectively prevents data writing errors. Users can expand the RAM up to 32GB using the two memory slots for the smooth running of demanding applications. The design includes eight bays for SATA hard drives or SSDs, complemented by four integrated Gigabit LAN ports.

Durable construction
With a depth of 306.6mm, the device fits into shallow rack cabinets. Its compact 482mm width makes it easy to install in two-post systems. The device's design saves space in data racks and simplifies cable management. The metal chassis, weighing a total of 6.9kg, requires secure mounting with rails. The 88mm height corresponds to a 2U size, and two 80×80mm fans handle the cooling of internal components.
Data transfer speed
The sequential read speed reaches 2315Mb/s, and writing occurs at 1147Mb/s with an optimal configuration. The network storage delivers high performance under heavy loads on a corporate network. The random read IOPS value exceeds 100000, and random write shows 54000 IOPS. Data is transferred via four integrated Gigabit LAN ports, which support Link Aggregation and Failover functions to maintain connection stability.
Expansion options
A free PCIe Gen3 ×8 slot offers space for installing add-on cards. Users can add 10GbE or 25GbE network adapters. Add-on modules can be used to create a fast NVMe SSD cache to speed up system response. The capacity can be increased by connecting an RX418 expansion unit. This raises the total number of drive bays to twelve.
Data protection and integrity
The Btrfs file system protects stored files from corruption. Memory modules with ECC technology correct single-bit errors in real time. Snapshot Replication records the state of folders at a point in time with a frequency from every 5 minutes. File recovery then takes just a few seconds.
Backup, virtualisation and management
The Active Backup Suite unifies backup tasks for your entire company infrastructure. The tool saves data from Windows computers, virtual machines, and cloud services. The Hyper Backup feature saves backups to the cloud or to external storage. Global deduplication reduces the demands on disk capacity. The system also supports incremental data transfers. Virtual Machine Manager runs different operating systems in isolated environments. Administrators can easily clone and migrate virtual machines. The DiskStation Manager operating system includes a clear interface for complete management of all functions. Central Management System links multiple devices into a single console. The Synology Drive service provides remote access to files.
