This powerful story by Italian author Emanuela Anechoum explores the theme of children from mixed-nationality marriages who, despite the tolerant West, struggle to find their personal paths and their place in the world.
The main character, Mina, the daughter of an Italian mother suffering from depression and a Moroccan father, has faced local gossip since childhood in her native Calabrian town and suffered from a feeling of not belonging anywhere. For the last six years, she has therefore lived in London, where she has built a seemingly perfect life in an anxious effort to become someone new.
When her father, Omar, suddenly dies, Mina returns to Calabria. Omar has left behind the Tangerinn bar, frequented mainly by a diverse community of immigrants. In this unique place, Mina rediscovers her roots, meets new friends, and above all, must come to terms with the memories of her father, who, like her, left his homeland in his youth for a dream life. But what if Mina never really knew her father at all?
Young writer Emanuela Anechoum was born in 1991 in the southern Italian city of Reggio di Calabria. Tangerinn (2024), with which she reached the final of the Italian booksellers' award, the Premio Bancarella, is her literary debut.
