The Cursed Land
A dark past will one day come to light
Michaela Klevisová leaves detective Josef Bergman behind for this novel set in the Šumava region, looking at a crime through the eyes of two young women whose lives are intertwined with places that have repeatedly experienced dramatic history. The remote village of Jelení Hora has a dark past, and even today, it is not an ideal place to live. It’s no wonder Gerda always wanted to leave and escape the past. But now she’s divorced, penniless, and has no choice but to return with her daughter to the humble cottage her parents left her. Linda arrives in the same place for a holiday, searching for her family's history, who moved away forty years ago. Soon, a death occurs in the village, and both women uncover a strictly guarded secret related to a region where no one was destined to be happy.
In this book, the author of the successful detective series focuses on interpersonal relationships in an environment adjacent to a national park and a military area, rather than a crime plot. Through the past of the local inhabitants, she reveals a history full of twists and turns, which prevented some from putting down deep roots in these places and unexpectedly tied others to the Šumava region.
Awards: Czech Book Prize 2022, nominated for the Czech Book Prize 2021
