The dangerous ambitions of the Windsors
Five years ago, American Amelia Montague defied her family and married the man of her heart, for which she paid a high price. Her family disowned her, and after her husband's death, she was left penniless. To support herself and pay off her husband's debts, she gratefully accepted an offer to work in France as a personal secretary to her cousin, Wallis Simpson. She has no choice but to succeed and hope that, with the support of her Aunt Bessie, she can have a positive influence on Wallis and the Duke of Windsor.
Over the next two years, Amelia realises that life with the Windsors is not as wonderful as it might seem. Beneath the facade of a couple in love, Wallis's anger simmers over her thwarted ambitions, and it soon becomes clear that the Duke and Duchess are self-centred supporters of Nazism, selfishly pursuing only their own interests.
When Germany invades France and the Windsors leave their secretary to fend for herself against the Gestapo, Amelia finds herself in an unenviable position. She eventually starts working for the most unlikely of employers: MI5 and the FBI. She is persuaded to go undercover and join the Windsors in Nassau. Her mission is to find out the extent of Wallis and the Duke's ties to the Nazis. She soon realises that Wallis's betrayal runs much deeper than either the American or British governments ever suspected.
