The Secret of the Last Night

The worst thing that ever happened in the residential neighbourhood of Hemlock Circle took place in Ethan Marsh's garden. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend, Billy, fell asleep in a tent pitched on the neatly trimmed lawn of the quiet street. But in the morning, Ethan woke up alone. The tent had been slashed with a knife, and Billy was gone. He was never seen again.

Thirty years later, Ethan reluctantly returns to his childhood home. He can't sleep, is plagued by nightmares, and starts to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night. Someone is wandering the street in the late hours, and signs of Billy's presence begin to appear in the garden. Is someone playing a cruel joke on Ethan? Or has Billy, long thought dead, returned to Hemlock Circle?

The mysterious events compel Ethan to find out what really happened that night. His investigation brings him back together with former friends and neighbours and leads him into the surrounding woods. To the places where Billy claimed ghosts roamed and where a mysterious institute conducts secret research on a dilapidated estate.

The closer Ethan gets to the truth, the more he realises that nowhere is entirely safe – not in the silent forest, nor in the suburban street. And that the past can always return like a shadow.
