Nora Roberts
Nora Roberts was born Eleanor Marie Robertson on 10 October 1950 in Silver Spring, Maryland (she shortened her name to create her pen name, Nora Roberts). She went to a Catholic school, where the nuns taught her a sense of discipline that would later serve her well in her writing career: "You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't have the discipline to sit down and write, you'll never manage to write and publish a book." Until February 1979, Nora was a typical housewife, caring for her family and a small farm. Her life took a turn one evening when a snowstorm hit, trapping her and her children in the house for a week. "I don't even know what possessed me to pick up a pencil and start writing down the stories in my head. Maybe it was an act of self-preservation to keep my sanity. At that moment, I didn't feel the slightest ambition to become a writer." Although the manuscript she produced was rejected by publishers, Nora was not deterred and continued to write. Her first novel, Irish Thoroughbred, was published in 1981. One day, the budding author, who read a lot for inspiration, ordered a bookcase from a local carpenter. Bruce Wilder came, built the bookcase, then repaired the furniture in the house, and ended up staying with Nora, as they had fallen passionately in love. Today, Nora Roberts is one of the most prolific writers on the planet—she has more than 200 titles to her name (including books written under the pseudonym J.D.
