During the Vietnam War, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) F-104 Starfighter fighters played a vital role in air operations. Their primary mission was to escort Lockheed EC-121D Warning Star reconnaissance aircraft operating off the coast of North Vietnam. Although the F-104 was notoriously difficult to fly, it proved unrivaled in its role as a cover plane for other aircraft, although it also suffered losses. A total of 14 F-104s were lost in Vietnam for various reasons.
