“I’ll tell you what you don’t know. I’ll tell you what I’ve been keeping from you all this time, what I was thinking and what I was feeling. But we’ll also reminisce about what we already know. It’s going to be fun.”
Thirty-year-old Laura tells her story. The story of an orphaned fourteen-year-old girl, spotted in a children’s home by an older teacher. She talks about abandoned children who have to make do with a measured portion of love, about a strong friendship with the tough girl Maria, and about life in the border town of Aš. The past intertwines with Laura’s current life as a high-class prostitute and her corrosive thoughts of revenge.
In her new novel, Miřenka Čechová reflects on the ease with which others can be manipulated and asks where the line is between what can and what can no longer be forgiven, and whether revenge is a just punishment. At the same time, she experiments with a new literary form – a stylised audio recording.
Miřenka Čechová (1982) works at the intersection of experimental theatre and literature. Her theatrical work includes projects that process the authentic stories of invisible women and often touch upon current social issues. She is the author of the autobiographical prose novel Baletky (The Ballerinas) (Paseka 2020), which was nominated for the European Union Prize for Literature, and also the fictional documentary Miss AmeriKa (2018). She adapted both works for the stage, earning two Thalia Award nominations for her portrayals. She likes chaos and complicated personalities.
