Winterman's mysteries

An imaginative detective story, nominated by the Swedish Crime Writers' Academy for Best Swedish Debut 2025.

Private investigator Moses Winterman runs a small agency from the ground floor of a closed-down furrier's shop. What begins as a series of routine cases soon unfolds into an interconnected web. A safe is pulled from the quiet waters of a river. When it turns out to contain a human head, countless questions arise, but the investigation stalls. The only person who might know the truth is a blind poet, whose forgotten poems bear witness to the event years later.

In a letter to a friend, Sokolov Sidler confesses he fears for his life. If he were to disappear, his wife should be thoroughly investigated. A few days later, Sidler does indeed vanish at sea, and the police believe he was caught by the wind—but was it even windy that day?

Paul Molard is a distinctive-looking man who is being impersonated by someone—someone who is behaving very improperly. The unknown person wants to hurt Molard, to disgrace him. But he doesn't understand why. How are these three cases connected?

Impressive, entertaining, and witty. K. Svensson carefully selects various building blocks, clichés, and literary devices from the history of the detective novel and cleverly weaves them into his story of the rise, fame, and fall of private investigator Winterman.

The Winterman Mysteries is a very unconventional detective story, set in a fictional country. The language is rich and the style is humorous with a touch of burlesque. The author's joy in storytelling is evident.

No one else has written anything like this—it's a truly original work. The author has an impressive talent for unearthing unknown historical events. It is a wonderful book, fantastically witty in places, and a liberating, uncompromising addition to the genre.
