Runners are born free
Fall in love with running again with a book that takes you into the wild
Running is as natural as humanity itself. “It is as simple, spontaneous, and rewarding as singing. We have been doing it for thousands of years: out of necessity (hunting, fleeing, etc.) and for countless generations for pleasure. Children need no more special training or equipment to discover the joy of running than dogs or horses. The running industry is no more necessary here than a tree-climbing industry or a hide-and-seek industry.” This is essentially the main idea of Richard Askwith’s book, in which he returns to the roots, beauty, simplicity, and freedom of running, independent of the commercial trappings of the new millennium and free from the pressure to perform.
Richard Askwith
Richard Askwith is a generally unassuming, middle-aged Englishman with several strong passions: running, freedom, the countryside, and writing. And, interestingly, a fondness for Czech sporting personalities. Among his most successful books is Feet in the Clouds, which won him the award for Best New Writer at the British Sports Publishing Awards. For his biography of the Czechoslovak jockey Lata Brandisová, Unbreakable: The Countess Who Defied the Nazis in the World's Most Dangerous Horse Race, he won Biography of the Year at the Telegraph Sports Book Awards in 2020, and his book Today We Die a Little: The Rise and Fall of Emil Zátopek, a biography of the Olympic legend, is also highly acclaimed.
