Říp is an iconic and cult mountain that holds a fundamental place in the cultural and social history of Czechia. It is shrouded in numerous legends and stories that shape the identity of the Czech nation. This publication is the first major monograph about Říp and its immediate surroundings, offering a fascinating view of our national mountain as a geological and historical phenomenon, as well as the spiritual centre of a prehistoric and early historic sacred landscape. Modern aerial surveys and subsequent field archaeology have fundamentally changed our view of the Podřipsko region – uncovering a land of the dead with many cult buildings, and even an entire sacred landscape with large circular enclosures and long barrows, which, in terms of age and building layouts, is reminiscent of Salisbury Plain with its famous Stonehenge. At the same time, new geological research has revealed that Říp is the remnant of an extensive lava lake formed in the crater of a massive volcano several kilometres in diameter. The authors connect the latest scientific findings with cultural and mythological traditions, thus presenting a unique picture of the Podřipsko region as the sacred “land of the ancestors”.
