Dear Frank: II. Dopisy Bohuslava Martinů Franku Rybkovi z let 1955 až 1959 / Dear Frank: II. Bohusl
The second volume of Bohuslav Martinů's correspondence with Frank Rybka covers the period 1955 to 1959. In his letters, the composer often refers to his new compositions, such as the cantatas The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Opening of the Springs, and The Legend of the Smoke from Potato Tops. Another recurring theme is the performance of his operas (The Marriage, Juliette). The letters to Frank Rybka also document the composer's numerous travels around Europe, where he and his wife permanently settled in 1956. Rybka's willingness to help is once again evident, whether it was verifying the instrumental possibilities of the French horn with the composer's son, Boris Rybka, or securing transparent manuscript paper from the Circle Blue Print company, which Martinů had used in the United States since the 1940s because it allowed for easy reproduction of copies. The second volume also includes a postcard from Frank Rybka from Polička. The final letters focus on the visit of Rybka's son, F. James, to Switzerland. The last letter in this volume is addressed to F. James Rybka, Frank's younger son, who visited the composer shortly before his death.
