Freya dreams of one day becoming a warrior, strong and free, but instead she is trapped in an arranged marriage, spending her days gutting fish. Then suddenly, her dreams come true. Though not in the way she imagined.

Her husband betrays her, offering her up to the local jarl, who forces her to fight to the death with his son, Bjorn. To survive, Freya must reveal her deepest secret: she has a drop of divine blood, making her a shieldmaiden gifted with unique magic. Thanks to this, Freya can fend off any attack.

It has also been prophesied that whoever holds the shieldmaiden’s fate in their hands will unite the fractured nation of Skaland. The jarl is convinced that he is destined to become the king of Skaland, so he binds Freya with a blood oath and commands Bjorn to protect her from their many enemies. Freya must learn to fight and control her magic while facing the perilous trials of the gods. However, the greatest threat is the forbidden attraction she feels for Bjorn. If she succumbs to his charm, she will endanger not only her own life but also the fates of all those she has sworn to protect.
